With the new year, new semester, it’s time to reflect on the last semester and take a look at the time ahead and the last semester of grad school, yikes.

Reflecting the last 10 weeks

The fall semester was rocky! It took me a while to scope down the broad topic of women’s health to a topic specific enough but filled with opportunity, like body image. Once I was able to hone in on a topic, it sparked my drive.

In the 6 min final presentation I show an overview of the problem and the challenge I’m focused on —

How might we help teenage girls shape a resilient mindset around body acceptance?

The leading concept I have so far is called — Reflect, an app helping us change the way we think about our bodies through daily exercises inspired by current therapy techniques.

Current status update

A more in-depth look at the reflection of the current concept. Here’s a quick overview of the status.

Things I feel good about

  • Topic/industry: I’m excited about the topic and haven’t found a lot of competitors in the health/wellness industry that tackle body image.
  • Problem: If the current problem is solved, I think it could be impactful for the long-term. In my research I’ve found mindset is very important and it can help with other self-confidence issues.
  • Research: There’s a clear problem and need for the problem to be addressed.

Things to think about

  • Current solution / medium: I think it’s important to think about the right medium for the solution. It’s currently an app but there’s a lot of apps out there, why would someone be motivated to download another app?
  • Value proposition: It needs to validated by users.
  • Business model: I haven’t yet started to think about revenue streams and the business model of the concept.

Hopes & Fears

Staying motivated and creative has been tough for me, so to create a thoughtful and authentic design that could make an impact, I need to find creativity and stability. I think having thesis buddies will help do both.

It’s not lost on me that the design process will have its ups and downs but I hope no matter the direction, I can be present and appreciate the time and opportunity in these last weeks.

Here we go!
